Although the total volume of freight moved between North American Free Trade Partners (NAFTA) declined slightly overall in 2016, trucking continued to dominate the market in overall terms securing the bulk share of freight movements within this arena. For the year, only movement via rail saw an uptick in 2016 in raw terms but the ratio of all goods moved by truck increased by 1.1%.
Commodity values declined overall but this was primarily due to falls in the price of crude oil during the year. Other commodities generally each showed either stability or modest increases in value shipped.
Overall trucks moved 65.5% of all US-Nafta Freight which in turn accounted for some $362.0 billion of imports, 63.3% of all imports. Trucking dominated exports to an even greater extent moving $338.0 billion in goods to the tune of 68.0% of the overall total.
Specifically for freight into Canada from the US, trucks continued to increase market share growing to 60.1% of all freight between the nations. For freight moving into Mexico from the US an even larger increase up to 71.0% of all freight was observed.
